CBD for cancer: Everything you need to know

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of many cannabinoids in the cannabis plant gaining popularity in the world of natural medicine because it appears to offer the body many benefits. While there is some debate around the topic, some people suggest using CBD in the treatment of cancer.

Although it is too early to make any claims about CBD for cancer treatment, this compound may help manage symptoms that occur due to this disease or its treatment.

It is important to note that CBD is not the same as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is an active cannabinoid in cannabis that causes a “high” when a person smokes or ingests it. Researchers are also looking at the possibility of using CBD for treating anxiety and chronic pain.

While the initial results from small studies on cancer cells and CBD are promising, they are not conclusive.

In this article, learn about the effects of CBD on cancer and how it may help ease the side effects of cancer treatments.

CBD as a complementary therapy

The majority of the evidence available suggests that CBD and cannabis therapies may complement cancer treatment. CBD may help people with cancer by:

Stimulating appetite

CBD oil may help relieve pain and stimulate appetite.

Many people who are going through cancer treatment experience nausea and loss of appetite.

These symptoms can make it difficult for them to maintain a healthy weight.

Ingested cannabis that delivers THC and other cannabinoids to the bloodstream may help stimulate the appetite, but there is no evidence that CBD alone can have this effect.

Pain relief
Both cancer and its treatment can lead to pain. Cancer often causes pain due to inflammation, pressure on internal organs, or nerve injury. When the pain is severe, it can even become resistant to opioids, which are powerful pain relievers.

CBD indirectly acts on the CB2 receptors, which may help with widespread pain relief by reducing inflammation.

THC acts on the CB1 receptors, which may be helpful for pain resulting from nerve damage.

Nausea
Cannabis and cannabinoids such as CBD may also be helpful for people with cancer who experience regular nausea and vomiting, especially when this is due to chemotherapy.

However, the antinausea effect appears to come from THC in cannabis, rather than from CBD. People looking to try cannabis to reduce nausea should prepare themselves for the potential psychoactive effects of THC in prescribed cannabis products and discuss them with a doctor.

Many people find relief from low doses of THC. Prescription versions of synthetic THC that have fewer side effects are available.

CBD for cancer prevention

Some people wonder about using cannabis or CBD to prevent cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reviewed numerous studies regarding the link between cannabis and cancer and found that the research has mixed results.

An older study of 64,855 men from the United States found that cannabis use did not increase the risk of tobacco-related cancers. However, this same study also found that male cannabis users who never smoked tobacco had an increased risk of prostate cancer.

On the other hand, the authors of a 2015 study found a promising relationship between cannabis and bladder cancer. After adjusting for several factors, they found that that cannabis users had a 45-percent lower risk of developing bladder cancer.

While research has shown that cannabis smoke still produces carcinogens, the link between inhaled marijuana and cancer remains inconclusive.

However, ingesting CBD extract does not expose the body to the same carcinogens as smoking marijuana. More long-term studies in humans are necessary to determine what role, if any, CBD has to play in the prevention of cancer.

Can CBD treat cancer?

There are currently no large clinical trials that are investigating the use of cannabis or cannabinoids as a cancer treatment. Small pilot studies exist, but the research is still in its early stages.

In 2016, researchers noted that the use of cannabinoids shows promise in the fight against cancer. The authors found that cannabinoids seem to inhibit the growth of many different types of tumor cell in both test tubes and animal models.

However, they also noted that some dosages or types of cannabinoid might suppress the immune system, allowing tumors to grow unchecked.

Much more research is necessary to discover the possible therapeutic uses of cannabinoids in cancer treatment.

Side effects of CBD

If a person stops taking CBD, they may experience insomnia.

The cannabinoid receptors in the brain do not act the same way as many other drug receptors.

For this reason, there may be a lower risk of side effects.

Unlike traditional medications for pain management, there are no apparent lethal doses of CBD. This is because the drug does not affect the central nervous system in the way that opiates do.

However, the cannabinoid receptors are widespread in the body, so CBD affects not only the brain, but also many other organs and tissues.

Small-scale studies have found that people generally tolerate CBD well, but some individuals may experience mild side effects.

These include:

fatigue
diarrhea
changes in appetite
changes in weight
CBD can also interact with a range of medications and cause liver damage. These medications include:

antibiotics
antidepressants
anti-anxiety medications
anti-seizure medications
blood thinners
chemotherapy drugs
muscle relaxers
sedatives, or sleep aids
It may be necessary to speak to a doctor about using CBD products, as they can also interact with some over-the-counter aids and supplements. People should exercise caution when taking CBD alongside prescription medications that warn about possible interactions with grapefruit.

Increased liver toxicity is a possible side effect of CBD. In one 2019 study in the journal Molecules, researchers administered varying doses of CBD to mice. The mice that received higher doses experienced liver damage within 1 day.

Clinical trials of Epidiolex — the brand name of the CBD medication that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved to treat epilepsy — did not find any indications of physical dependence.

However, the manufacturers of Epidiolex also warn of its potential to cause liver problems in the product’s safety information.

As the NCI note, CBD inhibits specific enzymes that may be important for cancer therapies. Cancer treatments that rely on these enzymes could be less effective if a person takes CBD.

Takeaway

While CBD does indeed appear to be a beneficial compound for many cancer symptoms, no scientific research suggests that CBD can be an effective cancer treatment.

Cannabinoids and cannabis itself may have their place as a complementary treatment in some cases, for example, for people who need help managing chronic pain and nausea.

People should always talk to a doctor before using CBD or any other compound during cancer treatment to ensure that it will not react with any of the medications that they are taking.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.

10 Dos and Don’ts for Beautiful Skin

1.The Golden Rule

Do: Make sure you always (and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt.
Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin.

Never forget to exfoliate your skin and remove the makeup before calling it a night.

2.Sun and Skin

Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores.

Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it’s cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

Sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

3.You are What You Eat

Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance.

“Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies.

Fresh fruits and greens is what healthy skin needs.

4.Sweat It Out!

Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block.

Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin.

Running, jogging and yoga will accelerate the cleaning process of your body.

5.Beauty Sleep

Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you – it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin.

“Don’t: Forget to wash and moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.”

Never forget to wash your face before sleeping and moisturize well.

6.H2O to The Rescue

Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect.

Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

7.Goodbye Acne

“Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain multani mitti (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions.

Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.

Never pop your pimples. Use rose water or chilled green tea bags.

8.Go Back to Your Roots

Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda.

Don’t: Neglect the basics. Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.”

9.Spa Day Everyday?

Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad.

Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself. A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.

Pamper yourself occasionally with spa treatments.

10.Healthy Habits

Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial muscles. For just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercises. You can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not?

The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years younger than you are!”, adds the Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad.

How to Lose Baby Weight

Tried-and-true, simple changes can make all the difference in getting back into shape. Here are the best tips for losing baby weight fast.

Once the baby weight starts accumulating on our bodies, the scheming begins about how to drop the pounds once the little one arrives. Here are some helpful tips for losing weight after pregnancy. You’ll soon regain your pre-pregnancy body—or even better!

Know Your Nutrient Needs

Here are guidelines to the calories and other nutrients you need daily for safe weight loss and good nutrition. (Calorie needs vary depending on age, metabolism, and activity level.)

If You’re Breastfeeding:

  • Calories: 2,200–2,400
  • Calcium: 1,000–1,300 mg
  • Folate: 280 mcg
  • Iron: 15 mg
  • Protein: 65 g
  • Vitamin C: 95 mg

If You’re Not Breastfeeding:

  • Calories: 1,900–2,200
  • Calcium: 1,300 mg
  • Folate: 180 mcg
  • Iron: 15 mg
  • Protein: 44–50 g
  • Vitamin C: 60 mg

“All these nutrients are vitally important if you’ve just had a baby,” says Eileen Behan, R.D., a dietitian in Portsmouth, N.H., who specializes in weight management for individuals and families. “Folate is important for future pregnancies; vitamin D and calcium are vital for bone health; iron will help with anemia; vitamin C is necessary for iron absorption; and protein is crucial for building and repairing your tissues. You need even more of these nutrients during lactation for milk production and because they leave your body with the milk.”

Choose Well-Balanced Snacks

Eating too much sugar can send your blood-sugar levels on a roller-coaster ride, and when your blood sugar drops, you’re more likely to eat the first thing you can get your hands on. To avoid temptation, keep only nutritious foods at your fingertips. Also stock up on low-fat milk and yogurt for snacks, as studies have shown that calcium from these sources can aid weight loss.

Here are some ideas for tasty, healthful snacks to help keep you on the right track:

  • Celery, carrots and peppers with low-fat ranch dressing
  • Egg or chicken salad on whole-grain bread
  • Whole-grain cereal with nonfat milk
  • Whole-grain bread with nut butter
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Apples with almond butter
  • Fruit smoothies

Also, eat high-fiber snacks like figs and raisins or whole-wheat crackers with veggies, suggests Sheah Rarback, M.S., R.D., director of nutrition at the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami School of Medicine. These can fill you up and help with digestion and regularity.

As for timing, wait no longer than two to three hours between mini meals, and aim for no fewer than six a day. Try having a snack every time your baby breastfeeds or has a bottle. This will keep your metabolism revved up, which will ensure that you burn a maximum of calories for losing baby fat.

Watch Calories and Fat

Say no to empty-calorie foods like sodas and chips, as well as fad diets that eliminate entire food groups. Instead, fill your diet with a variety of nutrient-rich meals containing lean protein, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and plenty of low-fat dairy products, says Tammy Baker, M.S., R.D., a Phoenix-based dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

Don’t limit fat entirely, though, since you need to eat fat to burn it. Make a conscious effort to include healthy fats (6 olives, a quarter of an avocado, 12 nuts, or a tablespoon of flaxseed oil) in three of your six meals. Studies suggest that omega-3s (the healthy fats found in salmon, walnuts, and flaxseed oil, among other foods) decrease abdominal fat.

Eat Frequently

And try to spread out all those fresh vittles. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day will keep your blood- sugar levels steady and help prevent you from overeating, Baker says. Keep in mind that if your calories are distributed throughout the day, they’re metabolized more efficiently and are less likely to be stored as fat. Between meals, “graze on fruits and vegetables and lean protein sources,” says Doreen Chin Pratt, M.S., R.D., director of outpatient nutrition services at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, R.I.

Here’s why eating frequently is important for nursing moms: If you’re breastfeeding, you need enough calories to fuel milk production. “It’s very important for breastfeeding moms to get enough calories [to make] breast milk, the baby’s sole source of nutrition,” says Cheryl Lovelady, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an expert in breastfeeding and weight loss.

Breastfeed Your Baby

When you’re breastfeeding, you need an extra 500 calories a day, or about 2,700 total. But since breastfeeding burns 600 to 800 calories a day, even if all you do is sit comfortably and feed your baby, you could still be losing baby weight.

Some lucky women can drop all their baby fat, and then some, through breastfeeding alone. That happened to Tiffany Tinson of Bronxville, N.Y. Six months after giving birth to her first child, Connor, Tinson had dipped to 10 pounds below her pre-pregnancy weight, even though she was eating more and not exercising much. “I attribute it all to breastfeeding,” she says.

But be aware that as soon as you stop or taper off breastfeeding, or begin supplementing your baby’s diet with solids, your calorie needs will plummet. You could really pack on the weight if you don’t adjust your diet downward and/or your exercise routine upward.

Don’t Diet Right After Birth

Experts advise against going on a diet right after giving birth. “To get your body back, you have to think health first,” Baker says. “Your body is working to repair itself.” To lose a pound a week, you’ll need to limit yourself to 2,000 to 2,200 calories a day if you’re breastfeeding – 1,600 to 1,800 if you’re not. You can add extra calories if exercising. But if you attempt to crash diet and eat significantly less than that, you’ll quickly regain any weight you lost. Create a two- to three-day menu plan to serve as an initial guide to get a feel of what those calories feel like spread over the course of a day.

Choose Foods With High Water Content

Foods high in water (fruits, veggies, soups, teas) fill you up with fewer calories. Water adds weight and volume without adding calories: It lowers the calorie density of foods. Research conducted by Barbara Rolls, PhD, nutrition researcher at Pennsylvania State University and one of the world’s leading experts on appetite and appetite control, shows that people who have soup before a meal eat significantly less than those who have a calorically equivalent “energy dense” food. Also, warm foods are more filling than cold, so drink a hot cup of tea between meals.

Eat Your Veggies Early

We tend to get busier as the day progresses. By dinner most frazzled moms crave comfort foods, not steamed broccoli. Set the tone for the day with a spinach and mushroom omelet for breakfast, or have baby carrots dipped in hummus as a mid-morning snack. Two benefits: You meet your vegetable requirement, and getting the day off to a good start means you’ll be more likely to defend your success come nightfall.

Opt For Dairy Three Times a Day (Unless You’re Allergic)

It’s high in protein, decreases cravings, and will make you feel satisfied. Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt contain essential nutrients (including calcium and potassium), which may help you better manage your weight. If you think you’re lactose intolerant, you can still eat Greek yogurtand cottage cheese without any trouble, as the whey has been strained away, removing all but a trace of the milk sugars (lactose).

Don’t Cut Out Your Favorite Foods. Find Substitutes

Love pizza? Order one with whole wheat crust. Ask for extra veggies and half the cheese. Don’t worry, the pizza guys have received stranger requests! If you want spaghetti, opt for high-protein pasta such as Barilla Plus. Use reduced-fat dairy. Don’t deprive yourself, as you’ll be likely to rebel in spades. But if a substitute just won’t do, have a small portion of the real thing after filling up on a healthy snack of veggies and lean protein, which will make you feel satisfied and prevent further cravings for junk.

Prep Your Meals and Snacks

Wash, chop, and steam several days’ worth of vegetables for snacks and salads; divide portions of cereal and nuts into sandwich bags. It’s not enough to have the salad fixings in the fridge. They should be ready to go so you don’t make a bad choice in a moment of weakness. When friends offer help, this is a perfect task to hand over, or they can play with the baby while you do it. As a side note, if pals want to make you a meal, tell them you’d love fruit, soup, or salad instead of the traditional casserole. With proper preparation, baby weight loss after birth has never been easier!

Pay Attention to Your Body

Debra Waterhouse, R.D., M.P.H., a dietitian in Orinda, Calif., and the author of Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy (Hyperion, 2002), suggests that you ask yourself the following questions when you feel the urge to munch: Am I really hungry? If so, give yourself permission to eat. If not, are you just tired or bored? Rest, call a friend, take a walk, pick up a bestseller—just don’t eat because you can’t think of anything else to do. What am I hungry for? Sometimes it’s better to satisfy a craving instead of trying to distract yourself with other foods, Waterhouse says.

“If you crave ice cream but pick something healthier, you’ll eventually break down and have the ice cream—after you’ve already eaten the yogurt, then the nuts, then the cheese.” Is my hunger satisfied? “Most people don’t check in with themselves—they eat what’s on their plate, and that’s that,” Waterhouse says. “Pause every five to 10 bites and see if you’re satisfied and if your stomach is full but not overly so.”

Get Up and Move

Most new moms are too sleep-deprived and overwhelmed to even think about exercise. That’s perfectly OK, says exercise physiologist and postpartum-fitness expert Renee M. Jeffreys, M.S. Most women’s bodies aren’t ready for serious exercise until six weeks after giving birth, anyway—longer if they’ve had a Cesarean section.

Start by walking around the block, Jeffreys says. If it feels good and doesn’t cause or exacerbate bleeding, walk a little farther the next day. Do this until your six-week checkup, after which you should be ready to do 20 to 30 minutes of cardio 3 to 5 times a week. You don’t even have to leave your neighborhood: The Surgeon General says that pushing a stroller 1-2 miles in 30 minutes burns 150 calories. So does walking up and down stairs for 15 minutes.

Lift Weights, Get Strong

Weight training will go a long way toward speeding up your metabolism, making postpartum weight loss easier. However, instead of going to the gym or investing in a set of dumbbells right away, Jeffreys suggests incorporating your baby into your routine. Hold the baby to your chest and do lunges, say, or do lunges behind the stroller as you walk. Or lie on your back, holding the baby above your chest, and slowly press her up toward the ceiling several times. If you’re unsure about what you’re doing, hire a personal trainer with a certification in prenatal and postnatal fitness for a few weeks to get you on the right track

Take Naps

“Getting plenty of sleep has been shown to help losing weight after pregnancy because you’re not compelled to binge on high-calorie, high-sugar foods for energy,” says Rarback. Strange sleep cycles like those forced on you by a newborn can upset your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose baby weight, Rarback says. Take a nap anytime the baby does, housework be damned. That way, you won’t end up with a long-term sleep deficit, and you’ll keep your energy levels and your potentially naughty cravings in check.

Whatever you do, don’t sacrifice sleep for exercise time in those early weeks. If you don’t sleep enough, you won’t have enough energy for satisfying workouts, anyway.

Get With Other New Moms

Chances other, other new moms are wondering how to lose baby weight, too. It can be helpful to connect with them for regular exercise. Carolyn Pione of Baton Rouge, La., just didn’t feel she had the energy or the time to exercise after she had her baby in 1999. Then, some pals who had formed an early-morning running group showed up on her doorstep urging her to join.

At first Pione, who had gained 38 pounds during her pregnancy, couldn’t keep up. But before long she felt compelled to catch up, and besides, she didn’t want to miss out on the friendly conversation. She lost all of her baby weight and now runs in 5k’s, something she never would have worked up to without the help of the group. “Alone, it would have been impossible,” she says.

After you find a group of moms, take turns trading recipes and hosting healthy lunches. And gather occasionally for a potluck picnic in the park (everyone brings one healthy item). A support system all but guarantees success

Go Easy on Yourself

It can take a year or more to lose the pregnancy weight. “You need to think of pregnancy as an 18-month experience: nine months of gestation, nine months postpartum,” Behan says. “This is a time when there’s a lot happening—you’re adjusting to your new life, your body is trying to replenish itself after pregnancy, you’ve gone through labor and delivery, and you may be breastfeeding. It’s a lot to adjust to, so don’t beat yourself up if you’re not bouncing back as quickly as you’d like.”

Quick Snacks and Mini Meals for Losing Baby Weight

  • Greek yogurt and honey, walnuts, and half a cup of granola
  • String cheese and an apple or pear
  • Lentil soup
  • Sliced turkey and avocado in a whole wheat wrap

The Results of Keto Diet

Learn everything you need to know to get the keto diet results you want with helpful tips and a handy weight loss calculator.

Weight loss is one of the most common goals of the ketogenic diet. If you’re using keto to drop pounds, you’re probably wondering how quickly you can expect to see keto diet results.

Since everyone is different, it’s hard to get an exact answer, but this article will cover the average weight loss rate for most keto dieters, tips for successfully losing weight on keto, and how to avoid common weight loss mistakes.

Weight Loss on Keto: Everyone Is Different

Everyone’s body is different, which means the weight loss rate for each person is different too. Your individual keto diet results can vary depending on four main factors.

Your Health Situation

Are you overweight? What’s your energy level? Do you have thyroid problems? Do you have insulin resistance or other blood sugar issues? What is your metabolic state?

Your overall health determines how fast you lose weight. For instance, if you have any hormonal or metabolic issues, the process might be slower than expected. That’s OK.

Your Body Composition

How much body fat do you have to lose? What’s your muscle mass? What’s your BMI (body weight to height ratio)? If you have a lot of excess weight you’ll likely experience more and faster weight loss in the beginning.

Your Daily Habits

Your exercise and eating habits make or break your weight loss efforts. What does your keto meal plan look like? Are you eating clean keto foods like coconut oil, avocado, and MCT oil, or do you choose high-fat junk foods like processed meats? Are you watching out for hidden carbs? Are you exercising? The energy you spend on a daily basis and your way of eating impact how efficiently your body burns fat.

Your Individual Fat Adaptation Period

Your body needs time to become fat-adapted, and the time it takes to get there depends on your metabolism. For instance, if you’re coming off a standard American diet (SAD), and your adult body has never run on ketones before, your adaptation period might take a little longer. You’ll lose weight when your body is in a state of ketosis.

The key to keto diet results is consistency. That means eating keto-friendly foods including healthy fats, veggies, and quality meats. Treat the keto diet as what it is — not simply a diet plan, but a lifestyle and metabolic shift in your health.

Set Yourself Up for Weight Loss Success

Before you embark on your keto weight loss journey, it’s important to get the basics right.

Some people think shifting from the high-carb standard American diet into a paleo or low-carb diet is enough to enter ketosis. But this isn’t always the case. It’s important to make sure you’re running on ketones instead of carbs. Otherwise, you’re not going to burn fat or lose weight.

Figure Out Your Keto Macros

Use the keto calculator to get your personal keto macros. Having a nutritional target based on your body composition will make it a lot easier to enter and remain in ketosis (and lose weight). It might seem like a lot of work to track your macros, but once you get an idea of how many grams of carbs, proteins, and fats are in the foods you eat most often, it will start to become second nature.

Plexaderm Review 2020

We’ve all done it. It’s late at night, you’re flipping through tv channels and you see a commercial for a seemingly miraculous product. As you watch the transformations unfold, it seems almost too good to be true. Frizzy, dry hair is transformed into sleek, shiny waves with the right shampoo, and acne covered skin looks flawless thanks to a new foundation that provides coverage without being too heavy. You may have also seen the dramatic looking results from Plexaderm, a product that claims to banish under eye bags and wrinkles (albeit temporarily).

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2020?

What is Plexaderm?

Plexaderm’s official name isPlexaderm Rapid Reduction Cream PLUS. It is meant to reduce the appearance of under eye bags and wrinkles for several hours. The cream should be applied to clean, dry skin. The product comes in a pump, and only a tiny amount should be applied; start off with an amount that is half the size of a pea. Using a light tapping motion, apply a thin layer of the cream. Allow Plexaderm to “set” and dry for approximately 10 minutes. If you will be applying makeup over the Plexaderm, allow an additional 10 minutes for the product to fully dry. Moisturizer should be used 15 minutes after Plexaderm has been applied. The company also suggests using a blow dryer on a very low setting to help accelerate the drying process if you’re in a hurry.

What Are the Ingredients in Plexaderm?

Plexaderm has a small list of ingredients including: water (aqua), sodium silicate, magnesium aluminum silicate, cellulose gum, acetyl hexapeptide-8, Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Red 40 (CI 16035), phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin.

The key ingredients are the sodium silicate and the magnesium aluminum silicate- in layman’s terms, these are silicate minerals derived from shale clay.

Sodium silicate is primarily used in the manufacturing of soaps and detergents, and helps to balance the pH levels of a product. It’s found in skin care, hair color, shaving products, bath items as well as makeup. Sodium silicate also has industrial uses. It is a corrosion inhibitor and can be found in cement.

Magnesium aluminum silicate is commonly known as purified clay. It can help to absorb excess facial oil and is also used as a thickener.

The other ingredients include dyes, and cellulose gum, a thickener that also helps to create a film on the skin. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 is a synthetically derived peptide  used in a wide range of skincare and makeup products and has water binding properties. Phenoxyethanol is found in green tea but is often created in a laboratory, and helps to fight bacteria and also works as a preservative. Ethylhexylglycerin works as a skin conditioning agent as well as a preservative.

How Does Plexaderm Work?

To understand how Plexaderm works, you have to look at the two key ingredients- sodium silicate and magnesium aluminum silicate.

Sodium silicate works as an adhesive. Another way to think about is that it’s like tape on your skin. It glides onto the skin in a liquid or gel form and when it dries, a thin film forms which causes a light contraction or pulling of the skin. When applied to under eye bags and wrinkles, it can cause a temporary tightening effect and the skin appears more taut. It is also thought to have a lifting effect on skin once it is fully dried.

Magnesium aluminum silicate works in conjunction with the sodium silicate. While sodium silicate “pulls” and tightens the wrinkle or the under eye bag, magnesium aluminum silicate works by filling in the wrinkle and helping to it look plumped up and even. When combined, the idea is that the ingredients work to pull, tighten and fill in the skin to give it a youthful look. While this is true in theory, keep in mind that any tightening and smoothing effect gained from these ingredients will only be temporary.

These two ingredients are also found in other skincare products promising a temporary lift and deflating of under eye bags, such as Gone In Sixty Seconds, Line Free Lift by Genesis Solutions and InstantFx Rapid Wrinkle Eraser.  They are also in natural beauty products such as Instant Wrinkle Eraser serum.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Any product has the potential to cause irritation in the skin; always do a patch test first. One common complaint from Plexaderm reviewers is that the cream leaves a white residue. Although no one said it was harmful, it was more of an annoyance.

Plexaderm Reviews

When you look at the infomercials for Plexaderm, the results look dramatic. Puffy under eye bags seems to disappear and fine lines and crow’s feet seem to vanish. It seems like surgery in a bottle. According to the brand’s own clinical study of 40 people, conducted in 2017, 75% saw a decrease in the appearance of under eye bags, and 78% saw a decrease in under eye dark circles. The customer reviews are overwhelmingly glowing, with users giving it 4.4 out of 5 stars. Customer feedback ranges from “Really works. Just wish it came in different shades,” to “It rids these brutal bags under my eyes .I have travel bags, I don’t need them under my eyes.” Some people say the product has become one of their staples; “Omg.. my eyes look great. I couldn’t be more happy!! What a fabulous product. I workout live without it!!”

But take a closer look at reviews on Amazon and you’ll see that as with many products, the reviews are mixed. Plexaderm currently has a 2.5 star rating on Amazon from 634 customer reviews. 54% of the reviewers give it a 1 star rating while only 20% give it a 5 star review.

Many reviewers say they were drawn to the product after seeing the dramatic infomercials. The positive reviews claim that the product reduced their puffy eye bags and eye wrinkles, and some people raved that Plexaderm took 10-20 years off their face. These fans don’t just like it- they love it. “I have had large bags under my eyes for over 30 years, about 3-4 minutes after I used it for the first time I couldn’t believe how great it worked! Almost completely gone! Incredible! If I hadn’t used it myself I would not believe it worked so incredible!,” writes one reviewer.

But the vast majority of the reviews say that the product did not work at all, or if it did work, the results lasted anywhere from two minutes to two to three hours. As one reviewer wrote, “I was so excited to try this product. I had heard good results. It did work for about 2 minutes. Then my underbags returned. Bummer. I was hopeful.”  Many users expressed disappointment. “I should’ve read these reviews first. My complaints are exactly the same as everyone else’s. On the infomercial they said you could use moisturizer afterward, but you can’t. I would have done just as well if I bought some Elmer’s Glue and applied it to my skin. And it would have been a lot cheaper. I should’ve known it was too good to be true.”

Some users said in order to maintain that tightening look, you cannot move your eyes or your face. Many customers complained that the product left a white residue on their eyes, while others said it caused irritation and stinging. There are also many complaints about the dispenser clogging, and it can be difficult to put makeup on the skin after the film is in place.

Based on the Amazon reviews, it seems that the vast majority of people using Plexaderm were disappointed with the product.  But when it comes to evaluating whether or not a product “works,” keep in mind that what works for one person and their skin type may not work for someone else. Factors such as oily skin and sweating can also reduce the effectiveness of a product such as Plexaderm. That’s why when it comes to find the right skincare regimen for yourself, there is always a bit of trial and error before finding what works for you.

Where to Buy Plexaderm

Plexaderm is not available in brick and mortar stores. The product is advertised on television and is mostly sold through the company’s website as well as sites such as Amazon and eBay. Always check that a seller is an authorized distributor before purchasing any cosmetic from a third party site.

Plexaderm Cost

The price of Plexaderm can vary, depending on the offer. One bottle is currently being sold for $59.95 while three bottles is priced at $119.90. The company also sells additional products, including Pure Hyaluronic Moisturizer, Collagen Peptide Firming Serum and HA Antioxidant Moisturizer which can be purchased over the phone.

Are There Any Risks?

Any new product has the potential to cause an allergic reaction. When adding a new product into your skincare routine, always remember to patch test.

If I Buy Plexaderm and Don’t Like It, Can I Return It?

According to the company website, all Plexaderm products can be used for 30 days risk-free. If you do not see or feel the results that you expected, call our Customer Service department within 30 days of your order to return any product (used or unused) for a full product refund less the cost of shipping and processing. The 30-day risk-free guarantee applies to the first month’s supply.

What Else Can I Do About Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes and dark circles are frustrating and can be chalked up to a wide variety of factors, including sleep, salty foods and stress. But there are ways to reduce their appearance, ranging from home remedies to the right eye cream. While a tube of eye cream cannot replace a good night’s sleep, applying chilled items such as tea bags, ice cubes or cucumbers can help de-puff eyes. An antihistamine can help if the puffiness is caused by allergies.

The right cream can also make a difference.

That number isn’t necessarily the one on your driver’s license, but a numerical sequence that makes up a skincare formula suited for your skin type and needs. Your personal combination will be just as unique as you (and your skin) are.  Formulyst makes it easy – all you have to do

is find your formula, and  follow the numbers.

Wrinkle Creams: Your Guide To Younger Looking Skin

Do over-the-counter wrinkle creams really reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? It depends.

People buy nonprescription wrinkle creams and lotions with the hope that these products can reduce wrinkles and prevent or reverse damage caused by the sun.

Do they work? That often depends on the products’ ingredients and how long you use them. Because these over-the-counter (OTC) wrinkle creams aren’t classified as drugs, they’re not required to undergo scientific research to prove their effectiveness.

If you’re looking for a face-lift in a bottle, you probably won’t find it in OTC wrinkle creams. The benefits of these products are usually only slight.

Common ingredients in anti-wrinkle creams

Moisturizing alone can improve the appearance of your skin. It temporarily plumps the skin, making lines and wrinkles less visible. Moisturizers are lotions, creams, gels and serums made of water, oils and other ingredients, such as proteins, waxes, glycerin, lactate and urea.

Wrinkle creams often are moisturizers with active ingredients that offer additional benefits. These added ingredients are intended to improve skin tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles. The effectiveness of these products depends in part on your skin type and the active ingredient or ingredients.

Here are common ingredients that may result in some improvement in in the appearance of your skin.

  • Retinoids. This term is used for vitamin A compounds, such as retinol and retinoic acid. These ingredients have long been used topically to help repair sun-damaged skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, which means it protects the skin from free radicals — unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. Vitamin C may help protect skin from sun damage and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Before and between uses, wrinkle creams containing vitamin C must be stored in a way that protects them from air and sunlight.
  • Hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) include glycolic, citric and lactic acid. They are used to remove dead skill cells (exfoliate). Using an AHA product regularly prepares your skin to better absorb other products and stimulates the growth of smooth, evenly pigmented new skin.AHAs, beta hydroxyl acids and a newer form called polyhydroxy acids have also been shown to be effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Coenzyme Q10. This ingredient may help reduce fine wrinkles around the eyes and protect the skin from sun damage.
  • Peptides. These molecules occur naturally in living organisms. Certain peptides are able to stimulate collagen production, and have been shown to improve skin texture and wrinkling.
  • Tea extracts. Green, black and oolong tea contain compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Wrinkle creams are most likely to use green tea extracts.
  • Grape seed extract. In addition to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, grape seed extract promotes collagen production.
  • Niacinamide. A potent antioxidant, this substance is related to vitamin B-3 (niacin). It helps reduce water loss in the skin and may improve skin elasticity.

No guarantees: Assessing safety and effectiveness

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies creams and lotions as cosmetics, which are defined as having no medical value. So the FDA regulates them less strictly than it does drugs. This means that cosmetic products don’t undergo the same rigorous testing for safety and effectiveness that topically applied medications undergo.

Because the FDA doesn’t evaluate cosmetic products for effectiveness, there’s no guarantee that any OTC product will reduce your wrinkles.

Consider these points when judging the merits of using a wrinkle cream:

  • Cost. Cost has no relationship to effectiveness. A wrinkle cream that’s more costly may not be more effective than a less costly product.
  • Lower doses. Nonprescription wrinkle creams contain lower concentrations of active ingredients than do prescription creams. So results, if any, are limited and usually short-lived.
  • Multiple ingredients. A product with two or three active ingredients is not necessarily more effective than a product with just one of them. Likewise, using several anti-wrinkle products at the same time may irritate your skin rather than benefit it.
  • Daily use. You’ll likely need to use the wrinkle cream once or twice a day for many weeks before noticing any improvement. And once you discontinue using the product, your skin is likely to return to its original appearance.
  • Side effects. Some products may cause skin irritation, rashes, burning or redness. Be sure to read and follow the product instructions to limit side effects. It may help to select products that don’t cause allergic reactions (hypoallergenic) or acne (noncomedogenic). Choose products that offer a consumer hotline in case you have questions.
  • Individual differences. Just because your friend swears by a product doesn’t mean it will work for you. People have different skin types. No one product works the same for everyone.

Your anti-wrinkle regimen

An anti-wrinkle cream may lessen the appearance of your wrinkles, depending on how often you use it, the type and amount of active ingredient in the wrinkle cream, and the type of wrinkles you want to treat.

But if you want to take the guesswork out of your skin care regimen, try these more reliable ways to improve and maintain your skin’s appearance:

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Exposure to UV light speeds up the natural aging process of your skin, causing wrinkles and rough, blotchy skin. In fact, sun exposure is the No. 1 reason for signs of aging in the skin, including uneven pigmentation. Protect your skin — and prevent future wrinkles — by limiting the time you spend in the sun and always wearing protective clothing and a hat. Also, use sunscreen on exposed skin year-round when outdoors.
  • Choose products with built-in sunscreen. When selecting skin care products, choose those with a built-in SPF of at least 15. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF of 30 or higher. Also, use products that are broad spectrum, meaning they block both UVA and UVB rays, and water resistant. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.
  • Use moisturizers. Moisturizers can’t prevent wrinkles, but they trap water in the skin, temporarily masking tiny lines and creases.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. It also damages collagen and elastin — fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely. Even if you’ve smoked for years or smoked heavily, you can still improve your skin tone and texture and prevent future wrinkles by quitting smoking.

A dermatologist can help you create a personalized skin care plan by assessing your skin type, evaluating your skin’s condition and recommending products likely to be effective. If you’re looking for more-dramatic results, a dermatologist can recommend medical treatments for wrinkles, including prescription creams, botulinum toxin (Botox) injections or skin-resurfacing techniques.
